UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY

Emergency hospitalization due to acute neurological illness/complaints

Patients with acute neurological complaints who require immediate inpatient diagnosis and treatment are admitted via the Central Emergency Department (ZNA) at Magdeburg University Hospital (UKMD). This includes patients with

  • Symptoms of a stroke (see Emergency admission due to suspected stroke)
  • First-time epileptic seizure; epilepsy with increase in seizure frequency, series of seizures, status epilepticus
  • Headaches of unknown quality that have occurred acutely or are resistant to treatment
  • Acute or progressive disorders of consciousness
  • Acute deterioration of a known neurological disease (MS relapse, akinetic crisis in Parkinson's syndrome, myasthenic crisis, etc.)

In the event of a life-threatening situation, please inform us in advance by telephone on 0391 67-21299 (ZNA rescue service telephone).

We request that relevant previous findings and radiological image findings as well as a current medication plan be provided if possible.

The presentation in the ZNA guarantees an immediate neurological examination, monitor surveillance, emergency diagnostics, and emergency treatment around the clock every day. Here we check whether admission to a UKMD ward (neurological normal ward, stroke unit/IMC, intensive care unit, or other) is necessary depending on the individual constellation of the illness. If the findings do not indicate an acute need for action, we will preferably refer the patient to a registered practitioner (general practitioner, neurologist, or other specialist). If necessary, we will also arrange for elective inpatient admission or refer the patient to one of our specialist outpatient clinics.
